How to Choose the Right Swimsuit for Lap Swimming
Share
Whether you're swimming laps for fitness, training for a triathlon or just getting back in the pool after a break, choosing the right swimsuit makes a real difference. The wrong suit can slow you down, wear out quickly or leave you uncomfortable after just a few sessions. Here's what to look for.
1. Prioritise Chlorine Resistance
Chlorine is the enemy of cheap swimwear. Standard fashion swimwear can fade, stretch and lose its shape after just a handful of pool sessions. For lap swimming, look for swimwear made from chlorine-resistant fabric — typically a polyester or PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) blend. These fabrics hold their shape and colour far longer than standard lycra or spandex.
At Swim Fit Gear, all our training and racing swimsuits are made from chlorine-resistant fabric designed to last season after season.
2. Choose the Right Style for Your Goals
The style of swimsuit you choose should match how you swim:
- One-piece training suits — the most popular choice for lap swimmers. Streamlined, supportive and available in thick-strap and thin-strap styles. Great for all levels.
- Jammers — knee-length compression shorts for men. Reduce drag and support muscles during long training sets.
- Racing suits — high-cut, minimal fabric for competitive swimmers who want maximum speed.
- Rash guards — ideal if you swim outdoors or want UPF50+ sun protection alongside your laps.
3. Get the Fit Right
A lap swimming suit should feel snug — not tight enough to restrict breathing, but close enough to the body that it doesn't create drag in the water. If you're between sizes, size down for a training suit (the fabric will stretch slightly in the water) and size up for a casual or beach suit.
Always check the size guide on each product page. Our FAQ page also has sizing tips to help you find the perfect fit.
4. Consider Strap Style & Coverage
For lap swimming, thick straps offer more support and are less likely to slip during flip turns. Thin-strap suits are popular for competitive racing where every gram counts. If you prefer more coverage, look for suits with a higher back or boy-leg cut.
5. Don't Forget Your Accessories
A great swimsuit is just the start. To get the most out of your lap sessions, pair it with:
- Anti-fog swimming goggles — so you can actually see where you're going
- A silicone swim cap — to protect your hair and reduce drag
- Training fins — to build leg strength and improve your kick
